If you’re planning to go Penang any time soon, August couldn’t be more perfect! It’s when all sorts of events will be filled on our beautiful Penang Island! So what exactly is George Town Festival? It is an annual, month-long celebration of arts, culture, heritage and community. Commenced in 2010 in honor of Georgetown as UNESCO World Heritage Site, the festival showcases world-class performances, installations and collaborations from international and local artists. The festival seeks to create new and vibrant connection between the traditional and the contemporary, each and every year. Georgetown Festival has been growing more and more, each year, attracting thousands of visitors and in an instant, it is becoming one of Asia’s must-see events! Are you excited? We know we here at Venuescape are!
“I have never thought about themes – never been clever enough.
I always see [programming] like me being a little boy and
every year wanting to share new toys, visuals and
experiences thatI am very fortunate to experience.
The five words I always use to guide me in [what I look for]
are quirky, sexy, intriguing, relevant and inspiring.”
– Joe Sidek ( Founder of GTF) in SCMP article
This year GTF will be ongoing the 29th July 2016 – 28th August 2016. Their first big event, which was on the 30th and 31st July 2016, A+SEAN Showcases, featuring our local artists and talents like Joe Flizzow, SonaOne, OAG, Bihzhu, Sheila Majid, Dasha Logan and many more! The event was a huge success and the crowd loved every bit of it!
If you see any random chairs (or maybe a hundred) around in the Georgetown Heritage area, don’t be afraid to move them around, sit on them, or rearrange them to create your own realm. In our case, we all know we’ll be recreating a nice backdrop for Instagram’s sake. Back to the point, this is actually a social experiment to democratise the public space in Georgetown, called Chairs. So don’t be shy, it’s always fun to be a part of something. If you ever see any GTF booklets, remember to grab one! They may or may not have free tickets inside, it depends on your luck. Plus, all the programs are listed inside so you can browse through them or on their website.
Before ending this post, we would love to share with you something GTF has to offer on the artsy side – Little Black Dress. It is a photography showcase of models that are fully ‘clothed’ in painted on little black dresses. The whole point of this is to remove prejudices against nudity in art. What better to express that than creating art itself?
If you missed last year’s BFF, well not to worry because they’ll be bringing it back this year! After its immense success last year, they’re returning with more local and international showcases. Oh! Some of our very own Malaysian Youtubers will be there – JinnyBoyTV, DanKhoo, Talitha Tan, Shawn Lee, I’m Jenn and Octopussy Dance Crew! Keep your dates free for 13th and 14th August 2016 so you won’t miss the amazing event!
Well, that’s the end of this post. We really hope you travel to Penang for the month of August because one should never miss Georgetown Festival!
