Walt Disney Studios recently released the first official trailer for the Mulan live-action movie. The long-awaited movie (since its announcement in 2015!) is set to premiere on the 27th of March 2020. Since the year 2019 is incredibly packed with live-action Disney releases including two other ’90s films, Aladdin and The Lion King, we can all agree that it is a clever move for the studio to place Mulan next year instead.
The newly released official trailer received a lot of attention and was a trending topic on Twitter not only in Malaysia, but also worldwide!

Mulan is played by a Chinese-American actress, Liu Yifei, who has been in Hollywood films including The Forbidden Kingdom (2008) opposite Jackie Chan and Outcast (2014). It took the Disney casting directors a year-long to search for the most ideal character for Mulan. After seeing nearly 1000 candidates across the world, Liu Yifei won the role.

For those who aren’t familiar, the movie follows a fearless young woman who disguises herself as a male warrior who will take her father’s place in battle in order to save him. Mulan looks to be changing up quite a few key elements found in the 1998 film.
The upcoming film will not feature some of the characters found in the animated version such as Mushu and Captain Li Shang. Mulan will be up against a powerful witch (instead of facing off against the leader of the Hun Army named Shan Yu in the animated version) and find love with a fellow soldier in her unit. Not only that, there will be a new Commander character created for the film to serve as her mentor.

Oh one more thing, did we mention that the latest Mulan movie will not be a musical? Looks like we won’t be able to hear Liu Yifei singing. But don’t worry, it doesn’t have to be one to succeed right?
