The news on the nomination of a Malaysian-made animated film for the Oscars has been trending on social media. Our local favourite cartoon duo, Upin & Ipin have created history when the movie Upin & Ipin: Keris Siamang Tunggal has been included in the longlist of nominees for Best Animated Film at the 2020 Academy Awards.

Its producers Les’ Copaque Production shared the happy news on their social media accounts. They thanked Malaysians for the extraordinary support for the movie.
The film, which premiered in March, broke the record when it collected RM25 million at the local box office after three weeks of screening. Now, it is competing with 32 other international animation films for the Best Animation Film category at the Oscar 2020 award.

The beloved twins’ blockbuster 2019 film was listed with great competitors such as Toy Story 4, Frozen 2, The Angry Birds Movie 2 and The Secret Life of Pets. Only five movies will be nominated, which will be announced in January next year. The 92nd Academy Awards ceremony will be held on 24 February 2020.
The film, costing RM20 million was recently awarded the Best Film Story at the 2019 International Animation Film Festival (Animaze) in Montreal, Canada. Apart from penetrating the market in China, Upin & Ipin: Keris Siamang Tunggal was also shown in Indonesia, Vietnam, Uzbekistan and India.

Upin & Ipin: The Lone Gibbon Kris, the movie’s english title, tells the story of Malaysia’s favourite twins interacting with characters from traditional Malay folktales, such as Mat Jenin, Raja Bersiong, Nakhoda Ragam and Si Tanggang.
