Reigning Miss Universe Malaysia 2019 Shweta Sekhon will be donning a Peranakan inspired national costume, combining the elements from the Malay, Chinese and Peranakan culture at the upcoming international beauty pageant. The exquisite costume was unveiled on Tuesday, November 12 will make head turns at Miss Universe 2019 competition.
Dubbed as “A Peranakan Indulgence”, the national costume will put Shweta at the centre of delicious treats such as onde-onde, kuih koci, Ang Ku kuih, kuih talam, kuih lapis, kuih sago and red eggs which are displayed in bakul siah, a traditional Nyonya basket cake as additional accessories. Yumz!
The custom-made national costume was designed by couturier Carven Ong, who was inspired by the rich heritage of the Peranakan community and its bridal traditions. Ong took 3 months to complete the beautiful costume which weighs 28kg.
“There were many challenges in designing and creating such a delicate and complex national costume, which is something that we are truly proud of. It took me three months to complete the costume.” said Ong.
The main body of the dress features a luxurious brocade used mainly in Malay wedding attires which is songket. The pair of wings are made out of Nyonya batik, commonly seen on the iconic kebaya worn by Peranakan women as sarongs and also represents the tails of a goldfish to symbolise the abundance of wealth and prosperity.

The golden cape made of songket with golden thread and red beadings was inspired by the traditional wedding costume worn by Peranakan brides, while gold aster flowers attached to the headgear were chosen to represent love, daintiness and femininity.
As for the evening gown, Shweta will be wearing a caramel coloured dress with a golden caramel hue to represent the fine grains of sand on Malaysian beaches. The gown is embellished with real seashell beads and pearls. The dress is completed with a mermaid’s fin silhouette on both sides, symbolising the beauty of beaches in Malaysia.
The custom-made outfits will be worn by Shweta for the upcoming 68th Miss Universe competition taking place in Atlanta, Georgia, USA on December 9. As for Shweta, despite the weight of the costume, she will wear both the national costume and evening gown with pride and hopes to win the competition with the specially designed outfits.
All the best to Shweta and the Miss Universe Malaysia team for the competition!
